We left Burgos today. One of the reasons I came on this trip was to see the tomb of El Cid and his wife in the cathedral of Burgos. Their tomb is in the floor in the main part of the cathedral, and the painting shown here in the post is of El Cid himself. If you’re not sure of the history of El Cid, you can find a lot more information on Wikipedia. He was quite a leader and warrior.
We made our way towards Sahagun on the plains - the very flat farming area between Burgos and Leon. It most certainly looks like Kansas or Nebraska, but filled with sunflower plants, everywhere!
Just before you reach Sahagún, there’s a halfway point (miles/kilometers) of the Camino Santiago French way, the way we’ve been walking. There’s two pillars with statues of Knights Templer that represent guarding the pilgrims for centuries. That is a very cool sight!
With that location, we now have about 16 days of hiking ahead of us to reach Santiago, then the coast.
Also, on one of the buildings walking into Sahagún, there’s a beautiful painting of all the characters from the movie The Way. If you’ve never seen the movie, I want to encourage you to watch it. It’s a great story with some nutty characters.
Had a couple of big bowls of spaghetti Bolognese and some great Spanish red wine before taking a nice hot shower tonight.
The one thing they tell us to avoid on the planes is drinking too much of the water, as it might make you sick. At least that’s what some of the threads have said in the forums about the Camino. We have water filters with us and stick to bottled water. I do not want the poopies.
