Left Sahagun really early, couldn’t sleep and walking across a country is a good way the get tired and clear the head.
Definitely not in the Pyrenees anymore. It feels like I’m walking across Iowa, but people are speaking French and a different kind of Spanish.
It’s flat and full of dirt fields, corn and some other green stuff that grows sideways, but not a vine… I’m walking along too fast to want to stop and inspect it. Probably get shot anyway.
One thing I noticed: This path having been traveled for centuries, there’s a lot of spots where pilgrims have no other place to squat than in a field or behind a tree. And, it appears a lot of respect for the Camino path and the surrounding properties has been balanced really well. Imagine sleeping all night, getting up and having coffee and a warm croissant (unbelievably fresh) and then walking… what do you think would happen about a mile or two out of town? I know… stop with the potty talk!! It happens and I just want to say again, pilgrims have done a very good job of protecting the country side. Everyone seems to have little backpacking shovels. I do.
So we stay tonight in El Burgo Ranero - in a truck stop motel, yeehaw!!! Keep in mind we are out in the middle of the plains of Spain. And yes the rain falls mainly on the plains, at least they say it does tomorrow. Heavy rain from about 5AM til 10AM. That’s about the time I’ll be walking.
